The village is close to the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve and the associated Caerlaverock Wetland Centre, where a wide range of waterbirds can be seen at close quarters. The area is particularly famous for Barnacle Geese and Whooper Swans, and is an ideal base for nature lovers.

Also nearby is the spectacular moated Caerlaverock Castle, which is under the care of Historic Environment Scotland. Besieged, damaged and restored many times over the centuries since its 13th century origin, it is the very archetype of a medieval castle.

Other places of interest for a day out include Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill, the beach at Sandyhills, the ruins of Sweetheart Abbey
at New Abbey, the picturesque harbour town of Kirkcudbright (the Artists’ Town), Castle Douglas (the Food Town), Wigtown (the Book Town),
the pretty planned village of Gatehouse of Fleet, and all the wonderful hills, lochs and castles of Dumfries and Galloway.

And children will be keen to visit the Moat Brae Peter Pan centre at Dumfries and the Cocoabean Chocolate Factory at Twynholm.
